The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
